(Chinese text)
Mother Sutta has come to Taiwan,
When she sees a car, she is afraid,
When she hears music, she dances,
When others see her, they laugh!
When she saw teacher Cheng painting,
She was surprised and delighted.
My Chinese friends look after me,
So she likes it here.
Actually my mother is really cute,
She's brought the joy of Christmas!
My mother finally came to Taiwan for the first time for Christmas 1993. I was so delighted, I painted a painting celebrating her arrival, and even composed a poem in Chinese! (Perhaps I was inspired by the Chinese literature classes I was concentrating on that year.) She was also delighted with her visit, especia1ly by the kindness shown to her by my Chinese teachers, classmates and friends. Perhaps the highlight of her visit was when we were at Mr. Huang's the framer's studio, with my classmates and
teacher Cheng Shan-Hsi, eating Chinese dumplings and drinking a little alcohol, laughing and talking. After the meal my classmates gave my teacher some paper, ink and a brush, and out of the joy of the fellowship he began writing calligraphy, and then suddenly painted a painting especially for my mother. My mother was of course thrilled.
